The Monkey’s Paw

Written on June 16, 2009 – 1:52 pm | by tmaks

We just read a screenplay adaptation of W.W. Jacob’s short story, The Monkey’s Paw.  Listen to this radio play audio version and compare it to the story we read by creating a post on your blog that discusses the similarities and differences.  Discuss which version you prefer and explain why.

If the above link does not work, click here to check out the link to my old blog.  It definitely works there!

Digital Citizenship

Use this link to Educational Origami’s wiki page on Digital Citizenship.  Read through the 6 tenets of digital citizenship on how to respect/protect yourself, others, and intellectual property.  Your task is to compile the info and present your learning in a  Comic Life document.  Be sure to follow the attached criteria:

**Don’t forget to keep a record of all the images you use in your project and their source – a table in Word works well- you can paste a thumbnail copy of your image and then paste the source beside it!**

The Boy in the Striped Pajamas

Written on May 6, 2009 – 12:37 pm | by tmaks

We’ve spent the last several classes discussing The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by John Boyne.  We have explored parts of the novel and viewed the movie.  It has sparked many conversations and evoked many questions.  The world is waiting to hear what you think!

Be sure to include answers to the following questions in your post.  Feel free to add any additional thoughts/responses that you feel you want to share.

1. What questions do you feel have been left unanswered by the

ending of The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas?2. i. What lessons does the Commandant learn whilst investigating

Bruno’s disappearance?

ii. Have his ideas and attitudes altered in any way?

iii. What evidence can you find in the final pages to support your ideas?

3. Consider the ending of the story:

i. Did the deaths of Bruno and Shmuel have an impact on you as

readers/viewers?

‘Of course all this happened a long time ago and nothing like this could

ever happen again. Not in this day and age.’

ii. Why do you think John Boyne finishes his book with these words?

iii. Is this the truth or a warning of some kind?

iv. Was this story like any other that you have read? How?

v. Did you enjoy the story and its ending? Why?

vi. If you were to suggest an alternative ending what might it be?

Investigating Website Validity

Written on April 14, 2009 – 12:14 am | by tmaks

We’ve spent some time talking about Information Literacy.  We even tried out Alan November’s quiz (thank goodness there were answers + examples of sites to demonstrate!).  Your assignment today is:

1) Skim all of the following sites and determine which one you’d like to complete the following assignment with:

Feline Reactions to Bearded Men

Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus

2) Open the Word document on the media drive, Grade 8 folder for a copy of the assignment.

Good Luck!  See you tomorrow!

The Outsiders Project Phase

Written on March 3, 2009 – 12:00 am | by tmaks

Now that we’ve read the book, watched the movie, we’re going to take things one step farther.  You need to choose a concluding written project.  Go to either of the links for a variety of projects to choose from; a 60s webquest or 8 other selections (DO NOT CHOOSE #6- it’s discussion questions that we’ve already discussed).  Your project will be completed in a digital format of your choosing and will be uploaded to our ELA wiki upon completion.

Feel free to email me if you have any questions.  I’ll see you Thursday!  Work hard!

The Outsiders: Movie vs Book

Written on February 25, 2009 – 12:57 pm | by tmaks

We just watched Francis Ford Coppola’s 1983 version of The Outsiders.  What did you think of the movie?  How does it compare to the book?  Which do you prefer?  Why?  We had some good discussion in class, but I’m curious to see what everyone’s opinions are.  You might want to write about who you would cast in your movie version if it were made in 2009 (this could get interesting!!).

You might also want to include links in your post to the movie or any other links you think might add to your post.  I’ve included links to a couple of reviews, one from the New York Times and another from Rolling Stone Magazine.

Response #3

Since we are enjoying a break from AR until mid-February, book selection is totally up to each student.  Write a response to something you’ve chosen to read during this time.  Post it to your blog.

Obama’s Inaugural Speech

Written on January 20, 2009 – 5:20 pm | by tmaks

Today we watched the new US President, B. Obama, give his inaugural speech.  If you missed it, or want to just watch it again, here are the links:  part 1    part 2.

I want to know what your impressions are of his speech.  What, if anything, did you find inspiring?  Why?  What predictions can you make for his presidency?  How will this affect Canada?  Of course, feel free to make any other additions to your post.

After you have posted your response, email your blog post link to Mr. Jones at mjones@svsd.ca.

Response Post #2

Written on December 1, 2008 – 5:47 pm | by tmaks

We’re going out on a limb and everyone is posting on a book they’re currently reading for this AR marking period or just finished. I’m curious to see what you’re thinking about your book choices.  Maybe we’ll find some books that we’ll need to add to our “Hmmm, that sounds good” collection of titles worth checking out!

In this post, include the following:

  1. Your response, obviously!!  Follow the criteria we’ve set.
  2. Hyperlinked text to the author’s web page
  3. tags:  assignment, response
